What does a film director do?

Confused about what is difference between a Producer and a Film Director? Read on …

The film director is the person who is in charge of making sure that every component of a movie runs smoothly.
Generally, the director works on a movie from its conception stage to its delivery stage.

How the scene is being shot, what props are going to be used, casting, briefing, how the characters should look, and who should play specific parts. Directors also work with individuals in charge of lighting, scenery, sound, writing, and so forth, to make sure that all of the elements come together.

The directors’ first role is the interpretation of a brief – the client’s project. They will think of the different approaches for the project and how to convey the story’s emotion, sound and picture.

The 3 key stages of a movie are:

Pre-production and presentation, this is the phase that is agreed with the client. It includes making crucial decisions, such as selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film. They then direct rehearsals, and the performances of the actors once the film is in production. Directors also manage the technical aspects of filming, including the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments.

The Production Phase is when the director works closely with the producer and communicates with everyone from lighting, sound, actors etc.

During the Post-Production phase, the director must have the skills to communicate closely with the editor, sound technician, design, and colourist. They work to completion and make sure the client’s project is delivered as agreed. The directors’ interpretation will help the producer know all the requirements of the project.

A producer is often the person who begins the project by looking for a story to tell.

Whether it’s a true story, popular book or topical event, a good producer is always looking for something fresh and interesting to develop. Once an idea is grabbed, the producer will work to develop it from an idea into a concept for a film. A producer will work with the screen writer to hammer out a script for production. Additionally, they will hire a director, choose a cast, oversee production and post-production.
